Article history: Received 12 February 2016 Received in revised form 26 February 2016 Accepted 27 February 2016 Available online 9 March 2016 Machiavellianism is characterised by distrust, manipulation, and a willingness to exploit others. Previous research indicates that Machiavellianism is associated with a preference for short-term sexual relationships and low levels of relationship commitment. The present study investigated the relationships between Machiavellianism, pretending orgasm, and need for sexual intimacy. Heterosexual women (N = 226) aged 17–57 years (M=27.06, SD=8.63) completed theMach IV (Christie & Geis, 1970), Reasons for Pretending Orgasm Inventory (McCoy, Welling, & Shackelford, 2015), and Need for Sexual Intimacy Scale (Marelich & Lundquist, 2008). Machiavellianism predicted the deception and manipulation but not improving partner's sexual experience or hiding sexual disinterest reasons for pretending to experience orgasm. The influence of Machiavellianism on deception and manipulation was moderated by relationship length. Women with high levels of Machiavellianism were more likely to pretend to experience orgasm in order to deceive or manipulate their partner. Machiavellianism also predicted the sex, affiliation, and dominance needs for sexual intimacy. Those with high levels of Machiavellianism reported a greater need for sex and for dominance but a lower need for affiliation asmotivations for sexual intimacy. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. To explore women's cognitive reasons for pretending orgasm, we first assembled a list of the reasons women report for pretending orgasm. We refined this list using independent data collected on performance frequencies for each item, fol...

The current study tested the hypothesis that women pretend orgasm as part of a broader strategy of mate retention. We obtained self-report data from 453 heterosexual women (M age, 21.8 years) in a long-term relationship (M length, 32.8 months) drawn from universities and surrounding communities in the southeastern United States. The results indicated that (1) women who perceived higher risk of ...

Objectification theory (Fredrickson B. L., & Roberts, T. A. (1997). Psychology of Women Quarterly, 21, 173-206) proposes that body image concerns impair sexual function and satisfaction. The present study was designed to test whether body shame was related to sexual problems and pleasure among heterosexual men and women (N = 320). Using structural equation modeling, we tested whether adult men ...
